THE STUDIO
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My ideas arise in uncluttered moments; driving, biking, skiing, walking on a beach, wandering through a forest, taking a stroll around the neighborhood, sitting quietly with my sketchbook or recollecting dreams. These moments help me focus, notice things, and settle into a sense of presence. And for me, that’s where every creative process truly begins.
I don’t approach a work of art with a rigid plan. Instead, I let intuition lead. The next work is already forming in my mind while I’m still working on the previous piece, creating a continuous, fluid rhythm in the studio.
Here, in the studio, my process is all about responding to what’s happening on the surface; solving problems that are real, imagined, or discovered along the way. I work with aqua-media paints, stained papers, wood, stone, minerals, webbing, and artificial sinew, building up layers of bold, vibrant color and textured material. Some layers are transparent, others opaque. Wiping, blotting, scraping and sanding may reveal earlier marks and moments beneath the visible surface, mirroring natural and human processes, like erosion, archaeology or renovation.
I use whatever tools the piece asks for: brushes, knives, trowels, rollers, sprayers, sanding blocks, glue, tape. The process is like conducting a conversation with the materials.
The finished pieces are abstract. They are embued with stories, situations, and symbols that explore people’s relationships with others, the natural world, and the built environment. They tap into memory and dream space, where intuitive impressions blend, shift, and resurface, giving each work a sense of emotional resonance and inner landscape.
